Eden’s day began as they usually do, lounging on the white sand beaches of Bali. Wandering was in her nature and was best spent dining extravagantly in lush venues or tanning on idyllic beach landscapes with a salty breeze through her hair. She was about to drift off when a ping from her indoor garden device jolted her awake- her grossum capsicum anuum would have 2 perfectly ripe peppers in 2 days. She observed the unique alert tone she had assigned to the plant monitoring app with a sly smile, but was expecting the news to arrive when she was already on a flight home. As expected, when Eden navigated to the live 4K chamber feed two immaculate bell peppers glowing blood red and swaying softly in the air circulation greeted her. She couldn’t help but swallow when thinking of the crisp strips of perfect pepper flesh she would soon crunch in tasteful bliss. There was still a whole day at the resort with much more relaxing until the trip was complete, but it couldn’t be helped. She called the airline and the hotel to arrange for a rescheduled morning flight back to her loft in Seattle. After a final glance over her chunky sunglasses at the pristine clear waters, Eden resolved to take a last dive in the ocean before returning back to her room to pack. Her mind was entirely occupied with that perfect flavor that can’t be found anywhere but her garden. “After all,” Eden thought, “Bali will be ripe whenever I return. Perfect peppers are worth a million vacations.”
Aaron was running late to a meeting he hardly wanted to attend. An old friend begged him to meet for lunch to “catch up” and “check in,” but Aaron knew this was a courtesy. Aaron’s friend has been badgering him with invitations to parties, shows, kickbacks, and golf for months now to try and set him up with one of the myriad of stunningly gorgeous women in his elite social circle. “You know that Caroline won’t stop asking where you are whenever I’m out, you could at least give her a call back, ‘Ron.” Jim was clearly hungover and clutched his coffee like a lifeline, but Aaron looked worse. “I know you have the time because I can see you haven’t slept, what are you on now?” Aaron’s eyes twinkled for a moment above his stifled grin and he pulled out his tablet to show his hard work. “I’m very close now, Jim. This is something Caroline, Christie, and Cindy wouldn’t understand, it’s a new species of mugwort that’s the closest match to the Gravettian excavation findings. It’s taken me 200 generations in my system to get this expression.” Jim chewed on the lip of his To-go cup while pretending to understand but couldn't help himself from griping “Aaron that’s the thing! These girls are obsessed with you and your plant system, I think they would gladly crawl up inside it and die if you asked them to. The work that you're doing is what it is, and I don't get it, but you’re driving them crazy Ron. They’re arguing who will get to carry your child!” Aaron was already back scribbling on his tablet calculating the next pressure and nutrient conditions to push his specimen even further to their ultimate form. His sausage egg and cheese croissant went cold, and mumbled “They wouldn’t die in there Jim, but I wouldn’t give them the pleasure of experiencing the opposite.”
